UNGPs in Legal Practice Roundtable Series
The BIICL UNGPs in Legal Practice Roundtable series was established in 2018 as a platform for legal practitioners working in the area of business and human rights to discuss developments arising from the UNGPs as they relate specifically to legal practice. It is a closed space for the free exchange of experiences and ideas under Chatham House Rules.
The Roundtable series is a membership-based group, bringing together some of the most expert and experienced lawyers working in the field. The Roundtable Series is structured around 3-4 Roundtables a year involving thematic discussions on UNGPs-related topics as they relate to legal practitioners. On occasion, external speakers may be invited to present on certain topics.
The Roundtable Director is Lise Smit. Lise conducts research on corporate human rights due diligence and other aspects of implementation of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
Prior to joining the Institute, Lise was a practicing advocate at the Cape Town Bar in South Africa. She has worked on business and human rights issues for the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre and the UN Global Compact Office.
The Roundtable's strength lies in its membership, which is made up of legal practitioners from a wide range of backgrounds and jurisdictions globally, including from commercial law firms, claimant firms and the Bar. Members meet regularly (3-4 times each year) to discuss topical issues. Overseas members join by conference call or web facilities.
Membership to this roundtable series is available on invitation only to legal practitioners in the area of business and human rights and the implementation of the UNGPs.
To guarantee an expert level of debate and continuity, membership is for named individuals only. However, members may nominate a named colleague with experience in the area to represent them on those occasions when they are unable to attend meetings.
Membership of the Roundtable is available at the following reduced introductory rates for the first 18 months of the Roundtable (exclusive of VAT):
- Legal practitioner member: £800pa
- Academic/sole practitioner member: £300 pa
- Non-UK based member: £300 pa
