HRDD Forum: Forced Labour Import Ban Developments

Date: 31 January 2023

Time: 17.30 - 19.00 (UK time)

Venue: BIICL, Russell Square, London and Online

Event Details

In September 2022, the EU Commission proposed a regulation to ban from the EU market products that were produced with forced labour. US customs authorities had already been implementing import prohibitions of forced labour produced products for a number of years. Products had been withheld from the market based on the ILO's forced labour indicators, and released based on remediation being provided for the workers affected by forced labour.

At this discussion, speakers will discuss how these import bans have worked in the US and elsewhere, and the implications of the EU proposed model, also taking into account WTO law and other practical aspects of implementation.

Chair:

Lise Smit, Senior Research Fellow in Business and Human Rights, BIICL

Speakers:

  • Hannah Edmonds-Camara, Covington & Burling LLP
  • Julinda Beqiraj, BIICL
  • Irene Pietropaoli, BIICL
