Dr Ivano Alogna is Research Leader in Environmental and Climate Change Law at BIICL and leads its Climate Change Law programme. Dr Alogna is spearheading BIICL's innovative Global Perspectives on Corporate Climate Legal Tactics project, which will create a comparative toolbox for corporate climate litigation. It will provide case precedents, substantive and procedural provisions, and legal arguments to be used as legal models by government bodies, local communities, NGOs, legal practitioners and the judiciary in bringing and adjudicating on corporate climate litigation cases, as well as encouraging corporate actors to consider their litigation risks and change business behaviour. The project was one of three finalists for the Basel Peace Office 2023 PACEY Awards European Project Category.
Dr Alogna is an Associate Member of the Sorbonne Research Institute in International and European Law (IREDIES), Sorbonne Law School, University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, a member of the World Commission on Environmental Law (WCEL) of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and its Climate Change Expert Group, a member of the WCEL Taskforce on the Rights of Nature, and an Expert of the "Environmental Law and Policy" Commission, IUCN French Committee. He is also a member of the European Law Institute (ELI) project on "Ecocide" and a Law Fellow at the University of Glasgow School of Law. He was the General Rapporteur of the "Global Pact for the Environment" project, led by the French Constitutional Council and the Club des Juristes.
Dr Alogna holds a PhD in Comparative and International Environmental Law from the Sorbonne Law School, University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. His thesis, "The Circulation of Legal Models in the Field of the Environment: Towards a Global Environmental Law", was awarded the 2023 SFDE Special Jury Prize (French Society for Environmental Law). He also holds an LLM in Environmental Law from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and the University of Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas, and several other law degrees and diplomas in Comparative Law, International Law and Environmental Law from universities in France, Italy and Spain. He has been awarded scholarships from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research, and the French-Italian University Council, as well as the 'Atlantic Corridors Award' for his Master's thesis in Comparative Law.
He has carried out several international research stays: at Glasgow Law School, University of Glasgow (Scotland); at the Paul M. Hebert Law Center, Louisiana State University (USA); at the Law, Environment and Development Centre, SOAS University of London (England); at the Indian Law Institute (India); and at the Research Institute on Environmental Law, University of Wuhan (China).
Dr Alogna held the position of Assistant Professor in Private Law (ATER en droit privé et sciences criminelles) at the University Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas. He lectures on International and Comparative Environmental Law (University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne), Climate Change Law, Environmental Liability (Catholic University of Lyon), Sustainable Consumer Law (BEUC) and Comparative Law (Paris Dauphine-PSL). At BIICL, Dr Alogna has developed a programme of environmental and climate change law courses, and a new course on Climate Change Litigation will be launched in September 2023.
Dr Alogna is also a qualified Attorney-at-Law (avvocato) at the Bar of Milan.
Dr Alogna is co-editor of the book "Climate Change Litigation: Global Perspectives" (2021, Leiden: Brill) and a forthcoming volume on "Climate Change Litigation in Europe" (2023, Cambridge: Intersentia). His research interests include Private Law, Legal Theory, Comparative Law and Legal History.
