ICLQ Announces new board members

The International and Comparative Law Quarterly Welcomes New Members to the Editorial Board

With ever-increasing numbers of submissions in diverse areas of international law, the ICLQ recently recruited two new members to join its Editorial Board. We are delighted to announce that Professor Richard Barnes and Dr Lawrence Hill-Cawthorne have been appointed with effect from January 2024.

Richard is Professor of International Law at the University of Lincoln. He is also Adjunct Professor of Law at the Norwegian Centre for the Law of the Sea, the University of Tromsø. He is a long-time friend of BIICL and regularly contributes to our short courses on the law of the sea.

He is widely published in the fields of international law and law of the sea, and won the SLS Prize for Outstanding Legal Scholarship for his book Property Rights and Natural Resources. He has acted as a consultant for a range of public and private bodies and appeared numerous times before Parliamentary select committees on matters related to law of the sea, fisheries and Brexit.

Lawrence is Associate Professor in Law at the University of Bristol and Co-Director of the Centre for International Law. His research interests cut across a number of topics within public international law, with his recent work focusing on international dispute settlement, international humanitarian law, international human rights law and international criminal law. He has published several articles in the ICLQ and in 2023 was awarded a Philip Leverhulme Prize for his research in international law.

Lawrence is also heavily involved in practice and policy. As well as contributing to projects with Chatham House and the UK Ministry of Defence, he frequently gives lectures and expert presentations to government and military lawyers around the world and has acted as advisor to numerous organisations as well as assisting counsel before UK courts and international tribunals.

The Editorial Board serves as the cornerstone of the Journal's operations, orchestrating its functions and maintaining its rigorous standards through quarterly meetings and regular online discussion, and we very much look forward to working with Richard and Lawrence over the next few years.
