Event Details

On 14th December 2023, the European Council and the European Parliament reached a provisional agreement on the Corporate Sustainability Due diligence Directive (CSDDD), which would have set obligations for large companies regarding adverse impacts on human rights and the environment, with respect to their own operations, those of their subsidiaries, and their business partners.

Since then, however, there has been intense debate and lobbying among member states - in particular Germany and Italy - on their support for the Directive. At a Committee of Permanent Representatives meeting on 28th February 2024, the text of the Directive failed to secure a qualified majority.

BIICL had originally planned a HRDD Forum spring roundtable to discuss the road to national implantation of the CSDDD by member states. After the latest vote, legal experts in different jurisdictions, including Germany, Italy, and France, will discuss the future of the Directive and the possible different scenarios ahead.

Chair:

Dr. Irene Pietropaoli, BIICL

Speakers:

  • Dr. Claire Bright, NOVA School of Law
  • Prof. Dr. Andreas Rühmkorf, Westfälische Hochschule
  • Lise Smit, Norton Rose Fulbright
  • Remarks by Jasmine Elliott and Dr. Ivano Alogna, BIICL
