Event Details

Join us on Thursday 20 July at 4pm for a launch event of a new BIICL report, Dynamic Competition and Big Tech Mergers: Case studies of Meta/Giphy and Microsoft/Activision.

The report examines the intellectual development of the concept of dynamic competition and its applicability to merger analysis. In a market subject to dynamic competition, firms compete through product and process innovation with the aim of not just being more efficient than their rivals but to disrupt the entire value proposition for consumers. Markets are often constructed of ecosystems rather than linear relationships between customers and suppliers or between undifferentiated competitors. The report takes the recent decisions of the CMA on Microsoft/Activision and Meta/Giphy as case studies to explore how the CMA has used the concept of dynamic competition in these cases and how the concept can be rigorously applied in future cases where markets are dynamic.

Following a presentation on the findings by report author Dr Richard Cadman, a panel will discuss the themes and implications of the research.
