This year's ICLQ Annual Lecture will be given by Professor Clair Gammage of Exeter University and Professor Phil Syrpis of Bristol University and is based on their article 'Sovereignty Fictions in the United Kingdom's Trade Agenda'published in Vol 71(3) ICLQ.

This highly topical article tackles a 'contemporary puzzle in international law: the UK's withdrawal from the European Union', through the conceptual framework of sovereignty fictions. The authors shine a light on the fundamental disconnect between the absolutist sovereignty popularised in the UK government's political rhetoric throughout the Brexit process and the concept of regulatory sovereignty that underpins the UK's future trading strategy. Through reference to EU law and practice, these competing sovereignty paradigms are analysed to highlight the opportunities and challenges the UK will face going forward as an independent trade actor.

The event is convened by Anna Riddell-Roberts, ICLQ Managing Editor
