Annual Harry Weinrebe Memorial Lecture: Do Human Rights Need Rescuing?

Event Details

Time: 17.30-18.30 (Registration from 17.00)

Venue: British Institute of International and Comparative Law, Charles Clore House, 17 Russell Square, London WC1B 5JP

In his new book, Professor Hurst Hannum calls for a 'radically moderate approach' that adopts a strict understanding of human rights as international human rights law, maintaining the distinctions between binding legal obligations on governments and broader issues of ethics, politics, and social change.

The panellists will discuss the approach advocated in Rescuing Human Rights and critically assess whether it supports the strengthening of the rights recognised over the last century rather than their erosion.

Chair:

Professor Robert McCorquodale, Inclusive Law and University of Nottingham

Speakers:

  • Professor Hurst Hannum, Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University
  • Professor Stephen Hopgood, SOAS
  • Sanchita Hosali, Director, British Institute of Human Rights

Event convened by Kristin Hausler, Dorset Senior Research Fellow in Public International Law, British Institute of International and Comparative Law.
