Thalidomide : Legal & Medical Perspectives
Event Details
PLF Seminar with MHRA
This interdisciplinary seminar will bring together distinguished speakers from a variety of backgrounds, including lawyers, scientists, physicians and regulators to discuss this topic at a workshop subject to Chatham House rules.
The seminar will be chaired by Professor Sir Alasdair Breckenridge CBE, Chairman, MHRA.
Speakers include :-
Dr Mike Emanuel, Centre for Health, Medicine and Society, Oxford Brookes University;
Professor Mark Mildred, Nottingham Law School;
Caroline Moore, HoganLovells;
June Raine, head of Pharmacovigiliance at the MHRA.
The seminar will cover both historical perspectives of Thalidomide, as well as more contemporary issues such as the continuing debate about the provision of appropriate compensation (though the ongoing litigation regarding Thalidomide will not be discussed), as well as the recent renewed use of the drug for strictly defined purposes. From a broader perspective, we would like to analyse whether the regulatory structure is now better adapted to cases such as Thalidomide, and whether the legal processes are better suited to providing a remedy if harm is suffered.
This is a Product Liability Forum event and attendance is by invitation only.
