Scholarships

 Empowering Future Legal Leaders

At the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL), we are committed to fostering diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities within the legal community. Our scholarship schemes are designed to support individuals from under-represented backgrounds, enabling them to access our world-class courses and benefit from unparalleled learning experiences.

Scheme 1: Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Scholarships

Our first scholarship scheme offers three free places per course to individuals from communities and backgrounds that are under-represented in the legal field in the UK and abroad. This initiative is a cornerstone of our commitment to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). By providing these opportunities, we aim to create a more inclusive legal community where diverse voices and perspectives are heard and valued.

Scheme 2: The Bluston Charitable Settlement Scholarships

With the generous support of the Bluston Charitable Settlement, we are excited to offer an additional 3 scholarship places per course aimed at:

  1. Students: who have recently received a needs-based bursary from their university or further-education college. Applicants must be within 2 years of graduating from the course for which such bursary was received.
  2. Small Charities, NGOs, and Community-Based Organisations and similar groups, including informal worker groups and community cultural institutions. Applicants under this scheme should include, in their application, information on how participation in the course will further the goals and interests of the organisation they represent.

Scholarship Coverage

The scholarship covers the full price of the participation fee for the course accompanied by one year of Individual BIICL membership. The scholarship does not cover travel and subsistence for in-person courses and BIICL is unable to assist in this regard.

Expectations from Scholarship Recipients

The number of scholarships is limited, and demand is high. We therefore expect recipients of the scholarships to commit to taking the course and to attending all sessions. Recipients of the course who fail to attend a sufficient number of sessions to ensure a certificate of participation (70% of live session time) will:

  • not be eligible to receive further scholarships,
  • not be entitled to complementary BIICL membership, and
  • may be charged the full fee of the course. Such a requirement can be waived in proven exceptional circumstances.

Restrictions

An individual may only receive one scholarship in any 1-year period (a full year must lapse between the end of the course to which a previous scholarship was granted and the start of the new course). Such restriction applies irrespective of the costs and content of the course for which the scholarship was received. There is no restriction on the number of applications that an individual may submit.

How to Apply

If you meet the eligibility requirements set out above, please submit your application below. You will need a copy of your CV and a cover letter as part of your application. The deadline for scholarship applications is advertised on the individual course page and is usually 3 weeks ahead of the start of the course.

Selection Procedure

Applications will be reviewed, and selection made by the Director of Teaching and Training (in consultation with course leaders and others as required). Successful applicants shall be notified of the decision at least 1 week before the start of the course. The decision of the committee shall be final and not subject to appeal. BIICL is not in a position to provide explanations for its decision on whether to award scholarships or not. If you do not hear back from us by the date of the start of a course, this means that you have not been awarded a scholarship on this occasion.
