Anglo American plc to join Business Network for the Rule of Law

Anglo American becomes the latest company to join the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law's Business Network alongside current members Big Yellow, BP, BT, Diageo, HSBC, Nestlé, Rio Tinto, Rolls-Royce, Shell and Unilever.

Since its launch in January 2017, the Business Network has made considerable progress including supporting its first research project which examined "When national laws conflict with international human rights standards". In 2019, the Bingham Centre will deliver Rule of Law Capacity Building to Network members, as well as developing new initiatives which have practical relevance and utility for business.

Ulysses Smith, Director of the Business and Rule of Law programme, said:

"We couldn't be happier to welcome Anglo American to the community of businesses working to advance the Rule of Law around the world. Now more than ever it is essential that representatives from all segments of society do their part to support good governance and the rule of law. Given the challenges of its industry and the jurisdictions in which it operates, Anglo American will have invaluable knowledge and experience to contribute to the exciting work of the Business Network and the Centre's Business and Rule of Law programme. Our work will be more valuable because of it."

Richard Price, Group General Counsel, said:

"As an investor for the long-term we recognise the importance of the Rule of Law to the sustainability and growth of our operations and, more generally, to the communities and the jurisdictions in which we operate. We look forward to working with the Bingham Centre and the other members of the Business Network to advance an understanding of the critical role that the Rule of Law can play and the potential challenges faced "
