BIICL Strengthens its Links with Japan, Contributes to Climate Change Governance Project

Last week, Prof. Yarik Kryvoi visited Japan as part of a major project on climate change governance, led by Prof. Tomoko Ishikawa.

On 5 August, the Institute of Geoeconomics (IOG) hosted a roundtable at the International House of Japan chaired by Prof. Kazuto Suzuki where Professor Kryvoi delivered the main presentation comparing sanctions regimes around the world. Participants discussed sanctions policies of various states, relevant procedures, their effectiveness and the potential use of sanctions in the context of climate change governance. The slides from Prof. Kryvoi's presentation are available here and a general description of the event is available here.

On 7 August, Professor Kryvoi had a productive meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan with Mr Hiroyuki Mase, Director of the Economic Treaties Division and his colleagues from the same division and the Economic Dispute Settlement Division, including Toshiaki Takada and Satoko Sawada. They discussed the reform of investment dispute settlement (including UNCITRAL Working Group III and the Energy Charter Treaty) as well as international law challenges arising out of the climate change and energy transition.
