Professor Spyros Maniatis Appointed as New Director of BIICL

BIICL announced today the appointment of Professor Spyros Maniatis as its new Director.

Spyros Maniatis

Professor Maniatis moves from Queen Mary University of London where he is currently a Professor of Intellectual Property Law and Head of the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS).

While Head of the CCLS, he has extended the reach of the Centre with programmes in France, Singapore, and Greece and added new areas to its teaching and research specialisms ranging from shipping and energy to art and regulation.

Professor Maniatis' expertise and research interests cover innovation and trade, trade marks and unfair competition, the interaction between intellectual property and competition law, as well as intellectual property in China. His work Trade Marks in Europe: A Practical Jurisprudence published its third edition in 2016.

Keith Ruddock, Chair of BIICL's Board of Trustees commented: "I am absolutely delighted by this appointment and I know that Spyros will bring tremendous talent and energy to this role. I have long admired the innovative and dynamic leadership which Spyros brought to CCLS in particular. I am very much looking forward to having him take BIICL forward in the coming years by building on the great legacy which Professor Robert McCorquodale had established during his ten years as Director."

Spyros Maniatis said: "I am delighted to join BIICL in its 60th anniversary year and at a time when the relevance of international law has become part of our daily lives. It is a great privilege to lead such an excellent organisation with its wide range of activities and initiatives, including the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law, specialist Forums, and its programmes of research across many international and comparative law areas."

Spyros will take up his new post on a part-time basis from April and full-time from September 2018.
