Dialogues between International and Public Law - conference report published

A report of the BIICL-Melbourne Law School conference on 'Dialogues between International and Public Law', held in London on 30 June and 1 July 2016, is now available

The aim of the conference was to generate constructive debate on how national public law and public international law and practice should, and must, co-exist, combining theory with case studies and the experience of practitioners. As pointed out by Lord Goldsmith QC in his keynote address: 'The interaction between international and public law is not only a current and contemporary topic, it is critical to our understanding of public governance today.'

The conference considered the relationship between these two branches of law at both theoretical and practical levels, ranging from Individual rights in disputes between States, to judicial review of government action in international affairs, conflicts between international investment treaties and constitutional human rights, the interplay between the UK's and the EU's international obligations to implement environmental democracy, the Internationalisation of the right to administrative justice and the English Courts' internalisation of the ECHR; as well as the implications of Brexit for the future of all these relationships.

Co-convened by Jill Barrett, Arthur Watts Senior Research Fellow in Public International Law, BIICL, and Laureate Professor Emeritus Cheryl Saunders AO, MLS, this conference forms part of the ongoing joint programme of activities between BIICL and MLS. The BIICL - MLS partnership was founded as an integral part of the Arthur Watts Fellowship programme in 2012, and includes a highly successful Visiting Fellowship and Internship programme. This collaboration is facilitated by the generous donation of Allan Myers AO QC to the Watts Fellowship.
