Undelimited Maritime Areas conference report published

Law of the Sea - Obligations of States in respect of Undelimited Maritime Areas

BIICL has completed a major research project on the 'Obligations of States in respect of Undelimited Maritime Areas' led by Jill Barrett, Arthur Watts Senior Research Fellow in Public International Law. The research report was discussed at a public conference on 22 July 2016, by members of the research team and other distinguished experts in law of the sea from academia, legal practice and the international judiciary.

A summary report of the conference proceedings is now available

Professor Sir Malcolm Evans KCMG, University of Bristol, who chaired the conference, said:

"Many maritime boundaries remain to be delimited around the world. Increasingly, questions are being asked concerning the activities which might be undertaken within such areas pending the final determination of which State exercises jurisdictional competence. This thorough and authoritative research addresses this vital issue with clarity and precision. It will surely guide thinking on the subject for years to come. This conference report sets out the the key findings of the pioneering work undertaken on this topic under the auspices of BIICL and the lively debate which they have provoked."

The results of the research have been published in the Report on the Obligations of States under Articles 74(3) and 83(3) of UNCLOS in respect of Undelimited Maritime Areas BIICL 2016, ISBN 978-1-905221-68-4.
