Malala Yousafzai urges world leaders to get all children in school by 2015

BIICL news response

On 12 July 2013, Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai presented a petition to the United Nations calling for the UN and other world leaders to help all children to be in school by December 2015.

The British Institute of International and Comparative Law has posted the following response to this news:

Education remains under threat across the world, as Malala stated at the UN. A BIICL report on Protecting Education in Insecurity and Armed Conflict makes clear that international law should be used to protect against some of these education-related violations. This would include upholding the human rights of students and education staff, ensuring prohibitions on child soldiers, providing protection of education buildings and facilities, and deciding on appropriate reparations. Governments and non-state actors should ensure that these laws are complied with and reduce the gaps in protection, so that everyone within a society benefits.
