Former Visiting Fellow awarded Journal of International Criminal Justice prize for essay

Former Visiting Fellow, Dr Conor McCarthy, has been awarded the Journal of International Criminal Justice prize for 2012 for his essay, 'Victim Redress and International Criminal Justice: Competing Paradigms, or Compatible Forms of Justice?' 10 JICJ (2012) 351-372, written during his time at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law.

In its citation of Dr McCarthy's article the awards panel note that the article asks "a question that will be fundamental to the future of international criminal law", namely the role of victim redress within the framework of international criminal law.

Dr McCarthy said: "I'm delighted to have been awarded the accolade for the research which I prepared when a visiting fellow at the Institute. Remedies and reparation under public international law is an increasingly prominent subject in PIL scholarship and there is a fast developing body of international and domestic practice in this field. The Institute has also been involved in significant research in this area. I hope that my research can make a contribution in this developing field, as part of this wider body of work presently being undertaken."
