Sir Franklin Berman KCMG QC appointed as Chair of the Institute's Board of Trustees

Sir Frank replaces Alex Layton QC who had served as Chair of the Board since 2005.


Sir Frank Berman joined HM Diplomatic Service in 1965 and was Legal Adviser to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office from 1991-99. Since then he has been in practice in Essex Court Chambers specialising in international arbitration and advisory work in international law. He is Visiting Professor of International Law at Oxford, and at the University of Cape Town.

A former Chairman of the Diplomatic Service Appeal Board, and the Appeals Boards of the Western European Union (WEU) and International Oil Pollutions Compensation Funds (IOPCF), Sir Frank currently chairs the Claims Committee of the Austrian General Settlement Fund for Victims of Nazi persecution. In 2006 the Republic of Austria awarded him the Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold with Star.

In 2010 he was appointed a Member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration.
