Leaving a Gift to BIICL

How you can help secure BIICL's future

A gift to the Institute could, many years from now, finance research, scrutiny, and analysis critical to supporting a just and fair world where human rights are respected and the rule of law is upheld.

Every gift in every will, however large or small, makes a difference.

As a charity, BIICL receives no government subsidies and relies on income from its training courses, events, membership, research grants, and corporate and individual giving.

By remembering BIICL in your will, you can help to secure the future of the Institute.

Your gift would enable BIICL to continue to:

  • undertake deep, investigative and cross-cutting research;
  • critique and scrutinise policy and legislation;
  • train lawyers, civil society and the law makers of tomorrow;
  • host conferences and events to disseminate research and promote discourse.

How to leave a gift in your will

If you decide to leave a legacy gift you will need to provide your solicitor with:

  • Our charity number: 209425;
  • Our address: British Institute of International and Comparative Law, Charles Clore House, 17 Russell Square, London WC1B 5JP.

You will also need to choose the type of gift you wish to leave:

  • A percentage of your remaining estate once all the expenses, liabilities and other specific gifts have been paid (residuary);
  • A specific amount of money (pecuniary).

You can contact your solicitor and ask them to add a codicil to your existing will or ask them to help you draft a new one.

Tax-efficient giving

Legacy gifts can help reduce your inheritance tax liability either by lowering the value of your estate before inheritance tax liability is calculated, or by reducing the rate of inheritance tax if you give at least 10% of your estate to charity. GOV.UK provides guidance on tax relief associated with charitable giving.

Sharing your plans

You are under no obligation to notify BIICL of your plans to leave a legacy, but doing so will enable us to thank you for your kind intent and also enable us to keep you informed about our activities and invite you to special events. It will also help us to plan for the future.

If you would like to inform us about your plans, please complete a Legacy Notification form.

Completing our Legacy Notification form does not commit you in any way, and is simply a statement of your present intentions.We guarantee your privacy and will not share your details with third parties.
