Volunteer Research Internship - Competition Law

BIICL regularly considers applications for volunteer research internships within the competition law programme and other law programmes within BIICL. All volunteers have access to shared office space and library facilities. A daily travel and subsistence payment of £10 is also available.

BIICL is currently looking for interns within the area of competition law and would welcome applicants with a broad knowledge or expertise in competition law. The volunteer research interns will have opportunities to assist in:

  • Research for current and forthcoming projects or papers;
  • Research for the development of new projects and funding applications;
  • Assisting in organising Competition Law Forum events;
  • Any administrative tasks associated with the above.

Minimum Formal requirements:

The Institute has high academic standards and expects a serious level of commitment and professionalism from its interns.

  • Level of education: LL.M degree in Competition Law or equivalent or relevant work experience in an international organisation, government department or private practice. Exceptional candidates with degrees in another discipline (e.g. politics or economics) may also be considered.
  • Research and drafting skills: ability to analyse and draw conclusions in a clear and precise manner; strong ability to conduct research through electronic means and resources. Prior experience in research posts will be considered a benefit.
  • Language skills: very high level of proficiency in English.

Additional skills we would strongly welcome (the relative importance of these will vary from time to time, according to available projects):

  • Familiarity with the law of the European Union and/or practical knowledge of the workings of the EU institutions;
  • Working knowledge of at least one other language;
  • Proven ability to work well in a team;
  • Organisational skills.

There are 3 internship intakes per year (of approximately 4 people per intake). Each internship lasts approximately 3 months:

  • Autumn (Sept/Oct - December): Application deadline 1 August each year
  • Winter/Spring (Jan - March/April): Application deadline 1 December each year
  • Summer (any 3 month period during May - Sept): Application deadline 1 April each year

Please give details of the amount of time per week you are available, the date from which you would be available and an end date if known, or indefinite if applicable. Please state the days of the week that suit you best, if known.

Normally an intern is required to be available for a minimum of one day per week for a minimum of three months. The more time you are able to offer and the longer your period of availability, the more likely we are to be able to make use of your skills in a way that is most rewarding both for you and for us.

If you reach the interview stage, you will then be invited for interview at the Institute at a mutually convenient time. Candidates based overseas may be offered a telephone interview. Unfortunately, we are not able to offer everyone an interview and, as a result, some applications will be considered unsuccessful without progressing to the interview stage, or may be kept on file until suitable work matching the applicant's skills becomes available. We will, however, inform all applicants of the outcome of their application.
