The Rule of Law in Fragile and Conflict-Affected States
Event Details
THIS EVENT IS FULLY BOOKED
Presented by the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law and Chatham House
'The rule of law' is a phrase much used but little examined. In his acclaimed book, Tom Bingham distilled eight conditions which capture its essence, and explained why it remains the best means yet devised for securing peace and cooperation.
Our speakers will reflect on the application of the Bingham conditions to recent rule of law efforts in the three contrasting countries: Afghanistan, Libya and South Sudan from the different perspectives of government, civil society and academia. They will also consider the appropriateness of these conditions as objectives for rule of law efforts outside of Western democracies.
