Documentary screening

DIVORCE IRANIAN STYLE is a 78 Minute documentary film by Kim Longinotto and Ziba Mir-Hosseini. The documentary is set in a courtroom in central Tehran, and with the barest of commentary it follows a number of women who come before the judge and use whatever they can-reason, argument, charm, outrage, pleas for sympathy, patience, wit-to get what they each need.

Discussion

The documentary was filmed in 1998. What are the changes introduced since then in Iranian family law? And what are the recent reforms in Muslim countries? Dr Mir-Hosseini will give us a general overview of Iranian family law, and Dr Abiad will discuss trends in Islamic family law from a comparative perspective.

Dr Ziba Mir-Hosseini is currently visiting professor in the Hauser Global School Law Program (New York University) and research associate at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London. She is the author of "Marriage on Trial: A Study of Islamic Family Law in Iran and Morocco" (I.B.Tauris 1993) and "Islam and Gender: the Religious Debate in Contemporary Iran" (Princeton University Press 1999; I. B. Tauris 2000).

Kim Longinotto is one of the preeminent documentary filmmakers working today, renowned for creating extraordinary human portraits and tackling controversial topics with sensitivity and compassion. Longinotto's films have won international acclaim and dozens of premiere awards at festivals worldwide. Her films include: "HIDDEN FACES" (England 1990); DREAM GIRLS (England 1993); and SHINJUKU BOYS (England 1995).

Dr Nisrine Abiad is currently research fellow at the BIICL, working on the comparative study on the domestic application of human rights standards in Muslim countries in the framework of the Iran Project. Prior to this, Nisrine was lecturer in Administrative Law at the Law Faculty and Business School of the Holy Spirit University of Lebanon. She has also worked for projects on Administrative Reform in Lebanon.
