Rapid Response Event: Returning ISIS Brides and Fighters: What are the Options?

Event Details

Time: 17.30-19.00 (Registration from 17.00)

Venue: British Institute of International and Comparative Law, Charles Clore House, 17 Russell Square, London WC1B 5JP

The case of Shamima Begum and other 'ISIS Brides' and 'ISIS Fighters' seeking to return to the UK and other countries has raised important questions of domestic and international law, not least relating to whether their citizenship can and should be stripped. The challenges, however, go well beyond those issues. Should these individuals be permitted to return? Are there risks if they do? Are there factors that are particular to understanding the circumstances of women in these cases? What are the options if they do return? What is their legal position and practical fate if they are not permitted to return? What does international law require of states?

These questions are relevant from a range of perspectives including human rights, national security and the law to combat terrorism. Building on their experience working in the field of counter-terrorism and nationality law, the speakers will engage with these issues from a legal perspective.
