Event Report

The indispensability of energy resources, such as oil and gas, for State's socioeconomic development and security brings the cross-border transit of energy to the centre of international debate. In this context, pipelines embody the confluence of distinct areas of international law, from energy law and investment law to environmental and human rights law.

This event will analyse the international law implications of the transport of oil and gas by means of pipelines. Building on speakers' expertise, the panel will examine questions such as the implications of countermeasures in the transit of energy through cross-border pipelines, the environmental issues that might arise from the cross-border transit of energy, the protection of private-sector investors in pipeline projects and the legal challenges posed by the removal and disposal of offshore pipelines (a process known as decommissioning).
