What business should do when national laws conflict with international human rights

The UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights expect companies to respect international human rights wherever they operate, and to 'seek ways to honour the principles of internationally recognized human rights when faced with conflicting requirements'. Questions often arise as to how businesses should adhere to international human rights standards when faced with such contradictory domestic requirements.
BIICL has recently undertaken a project for the Business Network on how to address conflicts between international human rights standards and national laws or practices. This event will launch the findings of this study, which sets out some examples of how these tensions manifest themselves, and recommendations for how business may seek to address these challenges in practice.
The event will be followed by a drinks reception at the top of the iconic BT Tower. We are grateful to BT for giving us access to this exclusive venue.
