This is a two day short course organised in conjunction with the University of Lausanne. It is designed for master students specialising in the area of international dispute resolution. It includes presentations on cross-border litigation, commercial arbitration, investment arbitration, English business law, collective redress and cross-border company law as well as a visit and case study at the Royal Courts of Justice.

• Impact of Brexit on cross-border litigation
• Litigating in the UK - practical aspects
• Current issues in investment arbitration
• Arbitrating commercial claims
• Comparative business law - features of English business law
• Collective claims - EU developments
• Cross-border company law - now and post Brexit
• Parallel proceedings (state courts and arbitration)

Two hour session in a working court room and around the courts.

Students will:

• Be introduced to the Royal Courts of Justice and what happens here
• Prepare for and debate a point of law in the context of a real case which has been heard at the Royal Courts of Justice
• The point of law to be debated can either link to: Joint Enterprise or an intellectual property right dispute
• Explore roles in a court room and meet a legal professional (where possible)
• Discover key spaces in the Royal Courts of Justice

Course benefits

This course is unique in that it introduces participants to a variety of issues arising in cross-border cases in a concise and engaging way. It includes the core elements of dispute resolution but also special areas such as collective litigation.

Teaching arrangements

Teaching will be seminar style with opportunities for class discussion and interaction. Practical examples and cases will be given. Reading lists, including reference to electronic materials, will be provided for each session.

All sessions will be taught in English. If you are not a native English speaker, you will need to have experience of studying in English at university level or to have achieved an appropriate score in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or an equivalent programme.

Fees and applying

The course fee is £200 (incl VAT) and covers:

• Two lunches
• Refreshments (tea/coffee/water) during sessions
• Visit to the Royal Courts of Justice

Event Cancellation Policy

Cancellation by us

The British Institute of International and Comparative Law reserves the right to modify or cancel any event if unforeseen circumstances arise. If we cancel an event we shall inform you as soon as possible using the contact details provided to us and offer you a full refund.

Cancellation by you

All cancellations must be made in writing via email to eventsregistration@biicl.org and be no less than one week prior to the event.

Payment for registration will always be required, and must be made prior to the event. If sufficient written notification of cancellation is received, a full refund will be given. If insufficient notice is given, payment for your registration will still be required.

No charge events

All events are costly to set up, even those for which there is 'no charge'. If you register but find you are unable to attend, please let us know as soon as possible. As a charity we need to cover the costs of events, and we may charge you a fee of £10 for administration and catering costs if you fail to attend or give us less than 24 hours' notice.
