The 1988 Constitution of Brazil marked an end to 20 years of military rule. Since then, Brazil has undergone several economic and political crises that have tested the capacity of the legal and political system. The recent impeachment of President Dilma Roussef (Workers' Party), which coincides with a fierce economic downturn and the largest anti-corruption operation of the country's history (Lava Jato), are once more testing the capacity of democracy to adapt and endure.

The Transnational Law Institute at King's College London and the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law (with the support of Jones Day) are pleased to host a panel including Professor Oscar Vilhena Viera, Dean of Fundação Getúlio Vargas - São Paulo School of Law, Professor Christina Murray (Bingham Centre) and Dr Timothy Power (Oxford University). The debate will take Mr Vilhena Viera's working paper entitled 'Maximization Compromise, Consensual Democracy and Gradual Development; Reflections on the Resilient Brazilian Constitution' as a starting point to reflect on the current political situation in Brazil.

  • Professor Oscar Vilhena Vieira, Dean of the FGV São Paulo School of Law (Fundação Getulio Vargas)
  • Dr. Timothy J Power, Associate Professor in Brazilian Studies, Latin American Centre, University of Oxford, Director of the Brazilian Studies Programme
  • Professor Christina Murray, Director of the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law

  • Dr. Octavio Luiz Motta Ferraz, Reader in Transnational Law, King's College London, and affiliate of the Brazil Institute
