Event Details

This panel discussion will bring together eminent judges of the European Court of Human Rights to reflect on the role of supranational adjudication in safeguarding the rule of law during periods of overlapping crises - such as armed conflict, democratic backsliding, public health emergencies, and political polarisation. Drawing on their judicial experience, the speakers will examine how courts can uphold fundamental rights, maintain institutional resilience, and preserve independence when states face extraordinary pressures.

The discussion will also explore the evolving challenges to judicial authority at both national and supranational levels, as well as the importance of principled decision-making in sustaining public trust and ensuring the continued effectiveness of human rights protection across Europe.

This initiative has emerged from the British Academy-funded project "The Dynamics of the Judiciary in Ukraine in the Context of the Rule of Law and the EU Accession Aspirations" led by BIICL Senior Fellow, Professor Tetyana Antsupova.

Speakers:

  • Judge Anna Adamska-Gallant, European Court of Human Rights
  • Judge Mykola Gnatovskyy, European Court of Human Rights

Opening remarks:

  • Rt. Hon. Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury, Former President of the UK Supreme Court, President of BIICL
