Event Details

Sports and their governance embody the very essence of competition. However, the relationship of sports governance and competition law has been a sporadic and controversial one. More recently the intersection of the two has become more commonplace and more firmly grounded in regulation and litigation.

With case law emerging in the full range of sports from football to ice-skating, this Fifa World Cup year seems a fitting time to bring together sports and competition lawyers and economists to survey the landscape over which they both work.

We will run two sessions; firstly looking to recent case law and developments with a view to teasing out key lessons and pointers for possible future cases. We will also review recent issues in the emergence of new leagues and the financing and management of emerging and reorganised leagues, as both new and old money attempts to balance financial stability with growth.

Chair:

Phil Evans,  Consultant Senior Fellow in Competition Law and Co-Director of the Competition Law Forum at BIICL

  • Dr Saskia King,  Bird & Bird LLP
  • Dr Bev Williamson , King's Chambers
