  • Preparing and delivering convincing arguments (what works and what doesn't; different styles for different fora)
  • Advocacy skills before appellate courts
  • Tailored advocacy before arbitral tribunals
  • Responsibilities of lawyers (to the court, tribunal, clients and opposing parties)
  • Addressing ethical dilemmas and integrity issues
  • Dos and don'ts of impactful advocacy before courts and tribunals
  • Cultural competency before foreign decision makers

Session format

This hybrid session will be delivered both in person at the BIICL office in Russell Square, London, and online via Zoom.

Lord Neuberger will lead the masterclass for approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, followed by 45 minutes of questions and discussion with participants.

Tutor: The Rt. Hon. Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury

Lord Neuberger is former President of the United Kingdom Supreme Court (2012-2017), a leading arbitrator, a Judge of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal and a judge of the Singapore International Commercial Court. He was called to the Bar in 1975 taking silk in 1987. His practice, which largely focused on property law, involved a large amount of court and arbitration advocacy, as well as much advisory work. Lord Neuberger is President of the BIICL, and of the Academy of Experts.

"David Neuberger has a very incisive mind. He gets right through the heart of every case very quickly and writes his awards quickly and precisely. He is at the very top of his profession."

- Chambers UK Guide 2026

"Lord David Neuberger is an absolute legend and he has accomplished so much in the UK and outside. He is the most humble individual and he still works like a Trojan."

- Chambers UK Guide 2026

“The features which make David stand out are the ease with which he works with co-arbitrators and parties alike, and the hard work he puts into every case.”
