Slowly; then all at once: institutional resilience, politics and reform in competition and market regulation
Date: 25 February 2026
Time: 14:00 - 17:30 (Registration from 13:30)
Followed by a drinks reception
Event Details
The post-War history of competition and regulatory policy was one of a long period of inactivity, followed by a series of sudden bursts of reform and modernisation during the late 1990s and early 2000s followed by another long period of relative inactivity.
More recently, there has been a number of largely unexpected and little trailed changes to both personnel and processes at all the main economic regulators that appear to be driven by factors mostly outside of the control of the regulatory system. Regulatory reputation and competence has rarely come under such intense scrutiny over such a short period of time, and the resilience of the various systems has been severely tested.
We will bring together experts from inside and outside regulation to discuss recent events, their drivers, their likely trajectory and what, if anything can be done to improve regulatory resilience in what would appear to be a new normal.
