The Competition for Critical Resources: Recent Developments in the Mining Sector in Africa

Event Details

The mining sector in Africa is at the forefront of global competition for critical minerals, with growing demand increasing the propensity for disputes involving governments, corporations and local communities.

This panel will explore recent developments affecting the African mining sector, with a focus on competition for resources; state actions to renegotiate concessions, raise royalties and increase their control over mineral resources; commercial pressures generating disputes over contract terms, royalties, and asset ownership; and the heightened focus on environmental management, supply chain diligence, human rights and other ESG issues.

In the face of these pressures and more frequent disputes, the need for effective legal frameworks to resolve and avoid disputes is more pressing than ever. Join us for an insightful discussion of the challenges and solutions facing Africa's mining industry amidst intense global competition.

This event is co-hosted by Quadrant Chambers, Keidan Harrison and the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL).
