Event Details

This hybrid event will present some of the key findings of our project entitled 'Beyond Restitution: Exploring the Story of Cultural Objects After Their Repatriation', which sought to offer a longer-term view on the return of cultural objects through an analysis of past processes.

Whilst a lot has been said on the legal frameworks applicable to de-accessioning museum objects and the processes adopted to address restitution claims, this project looked at the issue from a different perspective: it considered the longer term impacts of a return object on the communities and countries of origin and on those institutions or nations from which the objects have been claimed. By expanding the understanding of return processes, the project aimed to offer a nuanced perspective on the question of restitution and the broader issues at stake.
