The Rule of Law and 'British Values' Teaching for Citizenship and SMSC Free after-school CPD event on rule of law and the government's 'Fundamental British Values' teaching for citizenship and SMSC.

The Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law and the Association for Citizenship Teaching invites teachers and those with an interest in the citizenship curriculum to a free two-session CPD event on rule of law teaching. This will be followed by a free wine reception to network and exchange ideas from 18:30.

The first session of the event will comprise short presentations exploring the backdrop against which rule of law teaching comes into play, including the challenges of teaching the government's 'Fundamental British values' in schools and how schools could respond to this challenge. Confirmed speakers for the session are Professor Hugh Starkey (Institute of Education), Sunder Katwala (British Future), Balbir Sohal (Association for Citizenship Teaching).

The second session will be a workshop led by teachers with experience of teaching the rule of law, who will provide a guide to what the rule of law is and provide worked examples on how to teach it.

All teacher participants will receive:

  • A CPD certificate;
  • A free book of resources and DVD on the rule of law;
  • A free resource on Magna Carta as a historical context for the rule of law.

The workshop is to be held as part of the Centre's citizenship teaching project, where new resources on the justice system are being piloted in schools to address the legal aspects of the national citizenship curriculum and SMSC teaching (www.binghamcentre.bicl.org/schools)

Event Cancellation Policy

Cancellation by us

The British Institute of International and Comparative Law reserves the right to modify or cancel any event if unforeseen circumstances arise. If we cancel an event we shall inform you as soon as possible using the contact details provided to us and offer you a full refund.

Cancellation by you

All cancellations must be made in writing via email to eventsregistration@biicl.org and be no less than one week prior to the event.

Payment for registration will always be required, and must be made prior to the event. If sufficient written notification of cancellation is received, a full refund will be given. If insufficient notice is given, payment for your registration will still be required.

No charge events

All events are costly to set up, even those for which there is 'no charge'. If you register but find you are unable to attend, please let us know as soon as possible. As a charity we need to cover the costs of events, and we may charge you a fee of £10 for administration and catering costs if you fail to attend or give us less than 24 hours' notice.
