This event was held on 16 April 2014 (17:30-19.00) at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law, Charles Clore House, 17 Russell Square, London WC1B 5J.
Following recent floods in the United Kingdom, it appeared timely to consider the legal issues associated with disasters. This event provided an opportunity to hear from experts in this field, in order to assess the adequacy of the current legal frameworks on disaster relief and assistance to victims.
Presentations covered international law, and also provided a national standpoint, including the Model Act on the Facilitation and Regulation of International Disaster Relief and Initial Recovery Assistance (developed by the IFRC, OCHA and IPU). Representatives from the British Red Cross and the Cabinet Office also offered a particular insight into the UK's response to disasters.
