Access to justice and legal aid: can modern technology compensate for cuts?

3rd June 2013

The cuts to legal aid will bite hard into the delivery and deliverers of service. Do advances like the internet, the use of telephone 'hotlines' and video communication offer the chance of offsetting the effect of the cuts? What will be the impact of new huge national providers like Co-operative Legal Services? What are the lessons from existing bulk telephone provision such as is already provided by some solicitors' firms? What can we take from the experience of NHS Direct, an integrated phone and web service in medicine? What has been developed in other countries such as the Netherlands which have embraced of website delivery of legal assistance for the poor? In the light of developments like these, what should be the response of the Ministry of Justice to the provision of adequate access to justice? What will be the consequences for lawyers and lawyering?
