Images of a Changing Arctic and the Law and Politics They Suggest

21st October 2011

The Arctic is changing, and peoples and nations are approaching that change holding quite different images of the Arctic. In this wide-ranging lecture and visual tour, David Caron identifies the images involved, the politics and law implicit in each, and the futures for the Arctic that are both possible and likely.

The Arctic is the focus of current developments in governance, co-operation and competition among the eight Arctic nations; the search for oil and gas and its impact on the rights of indigenous peoples; the effects of climate change including the receding Arctic ice cap bringing new opportunities for shipping but dangers for the polar bear population.
