The Guantanamo Military Commissions: an Insider's Perspective

Event Details

Time: 17.30-19.00 (Registration from 17.00)
Event followed by a drinks reception

Venue: British Institute of International and Comparative Law, Charles Clore House, 17 Russell Square, London WC1B 5JP

This event focuses on the Guantanamo Bay Military Commissions, the military tribunals established to prosecute the detainees held at the United States Guantanamo Bay detention camp. Speakers will include Alka Pradhan, who represents Ammar al Baluchi, accused of having helped plot the 9/11 attacks, before the Commissions. According to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, he has been subject to prolonged detention on discriminatory grounds.

In addition to the legal issues raised by the al Baluchi case, including international human rights and humanitarian law concerns, this event will provide an insight into the general challenges associated with defending Guantanamo detainees, as well as the issues with the functioning of the Guantanamo Bay Military Commissions.
