This year, the Harry Weinrebe lecture will consider the developments in business in human rights, from early ideas to the adoption of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and legal consequences. The perspective is from someone who has been at the heart of most of these developments and engaged with most of those involved in the processes, especially at the United Nations level, for more than a decade.

This special event will also be the last public event of Professor Robert McCorquodale as Director of BIICL, who is stepping down at the end of the year. A reception will follow the event to celebrate his ten years as Director of the Institute.

Speakers

Lene Wendland, Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights

Ms. Lene Wendland is Chief of the Human Rights and Economic and Social Issues Section in the UN Human Rights Office and heads its work on Business and Human Rights. She was part of the team of former Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on business and human rights, Professor John Ruggie, and contributed to the drafting of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. Lene leads the Office's work to support effective implementation of the UN Guiding Principles and directs the Corporate Accountability and Remedy Project which aims to enhance accountability and access to remedy in cases of business involvement in human rights abuse. She also directs the secretariat of the inter-governmental working group drafting a legally binding instrument on human rights and transnational corporations and other business enterprises.
