CLF Meeting: Online Platforms

Event Details

Time: 17:00-19:00 (Registration from 16:30)

Venue: British Institute of International and Comparative Law, Charles Clore House, 17 Russell Square, London WC1B 5JP

It is recognised that online platforms, which comprise a wide range of software-based technologies, are drivers of growth and innovation, which benefit a competitive environment. Online platforms have transformed how we interact and transact. Successful online platforms with strong network effects can act as the main provider in a sector and be an unavoidable trading partner for dependent businesses. Such platforms usually possess substantial market power and can dictate the flow of personal data and exploit consumers.

This roundtable discussion will consider questions such as (I) is the changing market reality shifting powers into the hands of the few? (II) have certain platforms in certain sectors become utilities? (III) is the current regulatory framework 'fit for purpose'? and (IV) what are the resulting risks to competition and consumers?

Chair

  • Lorenzo Coppi, Compass Lexecon

Speakers

  • Christian D'Cunha, Office of the European Data Protection Supervisor
  • Professor Ariel Ezrachi, Pembroke College, University of Oxford
  • Helen Jenkins, Oxera
  • Barry Lynn, New America, Washington, DC
