The Rt Hon. Lady Justice Arden DBE

Court of Appeal of England and Wales

Distinguished speaker, The Rt Hon Lady Justice Arden, will deliver this year's Annual Grotius Lecture on Monday 21 March at the Law Society. The title of the lecture will be 'Water for All? Developing a Human Right to Water in National and International Law'.

Lady Justice Arden read law at Girton College, Cambridge and at Harvard. After a career at the Bar, she was appointed a Justice of the High Court in 1993, being the first woman judge to be assigned the Chancery Division. From 1996 to January 1999 she was Chairman of the Law Commission of England and Wales. In 2000 she was appointed to the Court of Appeal, the third female judge to do so. She is Head of International Judicial Relations for England and Wales, an ad hoc Judge of the European Court of Human Rights and a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague. She has several honoary degrees. In 2015, she brought out two books, Human Rights and European Law - Building New Legal Orders and Common Law and Modern Society - Keeping Pace with Change (Oxford University Press). Lady Justice Arden is an Advisory to the Board of Trustees of BIICL.

The lecture aims to be both enriching and thought-provoking. It will be of great interest to barristers, solicitors, judges, arbitrators, government officials, intergovernmental officials, academics, students.

The lecture will be chaired by the Right Honourable The Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers KG PC, President of BIICL. Lord Phillips is the immediate past President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. He is a long-term BIICL member, and has been involved in BIICL activities, including its Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law.

There will be a drinks reception and networking after the Lecture, followed by the Annual Grotius Dinner.

Event Cancellation Policy

Cancellation by us

The British Institute of International and Comparative Law reserves the right to modify or cancel any event if unforeseen circumstances arise. If we cancel an event we shall inform you as soon as possible using the contact details provided to us and offer you a full refund.

Cancellation by you

All cancellations must be made in writing via email to eventsregistration@biicl.org and be no less than one week prior to the event.

Payment for registration will always be required, and must be made prior to the event. If sufficient written notification of cancellation is received, a full refund will be given. If insufficient notice is given, payment for your registration will still be required.

No charge events

All events are costly to set up, even those for which there is 'no charge'. If you register but find you are unable to attend, please let us know as soon as possible. As a charity we need to cover the costs of events, and we may charge you a fee of £10 for administration and catering costs if you fail to attend or give us less than 24 hours' notice.
