Democratic Participation Research

We invite you and the members your organisation to share your views with us and the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) on the state of local and regional democracy. This can be done by filling in the survey at the links below (available in all EU languages):

Bulgarian,  Croatian , Czech, Danish , Dutch/Nederlands, English, Estonian, Finnish/Suomi, French/Français, German/Deutsch, Greek/Ellinika, HungarianItalian/Italiano, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Polish/Polski, Portuguese/Português, Romanian, Slovak , Slovene/SlovenskýSpanish/Español and Swedish/Svenska.

This survey aims to gain understanding and evidence of:

  • the circumstances affecting young people's decisions on whether or not to participate in democratic processes at the local (e.g., city/town) and regional (e.g., county, province) level;
  • how young EU citizens view the state of democracy at local and regional level and engage in it;
  • which specific tools could further encourage youth participation, including new and innovative practices; and
  • what the challenges are that hinder active and meaningful participation.

The survey is being conducted for the CoR by the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL) as part of a wider research project.

The survey and the research project form a part of the CoR's broader engagement in promoting European democratic values and democratic participation, including of young people. This is particularly relevant in the European Year of Youth 2022. The survey has 22 questions and will take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete. You will be able to re-enter the survey to update your responses, though you must do so from the same computer. Responses should be sent by 3 July 2022.

The survey is anonymous. No respondent will be identified by name (indeed the survey does not ask for your name) or context in the report analysing the data. Please access our Privacy Policy here. If you would like to discuss anything further, you can reach members of the research team via email on dp@biicl.org

Thank you for your participation.
