What is BIICL?

The British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL) is one of the leading independent research centres for international and comparative law in the world. Our high quality research projects, seminars and publications encompass almost all areas of public and private international law, comparative law and European law, and we are at the forefront of discussions on the many contemporary issues of international and comparative law. BIICL includes within it the innovative Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law, which has a particular focus on the many rule of law issues world-wide.

Our Vision

The British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL) exists to develop and advance the understanding of international and comparative law in the UK and around the world, and to promote the rule of law in national and international affairs. Through our work, we seek to improve decision-making which will help to make the world a better place and have a positive impact on people's daily lives.

Our organisational vision is for BIICL to be an independent leader in applied legal research and ideas: informing debate, policy and practice; upholding and maintaining humane and democratic values; promoting evidence-based decision-making; and contributing to the upholding of the international legal order and the rule of law in the UK and worldwide.

Building Back Better after Covid

The pandemic has placed the Rule of Law under severe strain throughout the world. Emergency laws have given Governments everywhere unprecedented powers to take away the most basic rights and liberties.

We are working to ensure the key Rule of Law lessons are learned for future public health emergencies.

By giving to this one-off appeal, you'll be helping us ensure that the Rule of Law is built back stronger after Covid.

Restoring Trust in Democracy

Populism has undermined public trust in our political and legal institutions in many democracies.

We are proactively engaging elected politicians and the public in discussions about the meaning and importance of the Rule of Law as a fundamental constitutional value that is essential to democracy.

By donating you will enable us to do more to restore the Rule of Law as a shared value underpinning trust in the institutions of constitutional democracy.
