Victor Kattan

Role at the Institute


Victor Kattan joined the Institute in December 2006 as a Research Fellow in public international law on the Human Rights in International Law and Iran project.

He is the assistant editor of the Yearbook of Islamic and Middle Eastern Law with H.H. Eugene Cotran and Professor Martin Lau. He is also the author of several articles on the Arab-Israeli conflict which have been published in international law journals, some of which are outlined below.

He is currently writing a book, From Coexistence to Conquest: International Law and the Origins of the Arab-Israeli Conflict 1891-1949, which will be published by Pluto Books/University of Michigan Press in 2009.

In May 2008, BIICL published The Palestine Question in International Law, which Victor compiled and edited. It was officially launched at BIICL on 21 May.

Victor has some experience working in the media: he has written several commentaries which have been published in this country and abroad, online and in the print media. He has also appeared on television and was formerly a Director of Arab Media Watch.

Prior to this he worked in the Occupied Palestinian Territories as a U.N. Development Programme TOKTEN consultant on secondment to a non-governmental organisation specialising in Palestinian refugee rights (BADIL Resource Center).

Education


Victor is a law graduate of Brunel University LLB (Hons.) and Leiden University LLM. His general areas of interest include the law of self-determination, U.N. law and international criminal, humanitarian and human-rights law. He is currently a doctoral student at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.
