This collection of essays arises from a Discussion Group held under the auspices of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law during the period 1985-88. It covers some of the most important advances and outstanding problems in the Laws of Armed Conflict as developed by the two 1977 protocols additional to the four Geneva Conventions of 1949 and by the 1981 Weapons Convention and its protocols.
A significant number of States, nearly half the international community, are now parties to the 1977 protocols and a growing number are parties to the 1981 Weapons Convention. The United Kingdom along with other leading States east and west has signed the two 1977 protocols and the 1981 Weapons Convention but at the date of writing, it has yet to ratify these agressments. It is hoped that the publication of this collection will help to stimulate interest in these treaties which merit everyone's concern as members of individual States and as members of the world community.
