Justine Stefanelli
Role at the Institute
Justine Stefanelli joined the Institute in August 2006 as an Intern on the Legalisation of Public Documents Between EU Member States project. She was responsible for assessing the US system of recognition in order to gain an understanding of its practical implementation for possible use in a comparable scheme within the European Union. She was then promoted to the position of part-time Research Fellow, continuing with work on the Legalisation project. In April of 2007, she began working full-time at the Institute on the new project titled "The Effect in the European Community of Judgments in Civil and Commercial Matters: Recognition, Res Judicata and Abuse of Process" which began in June 2007. Most recently, Justine acted as co-Director on the "Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship" project which was led by former Attorney General Lord Goldsmith and formed part of a wider review of Governance in Britain currently being conducted by the United Kingdom's Ministry of Justice.
Education
Justine holds a B.A. in Psychology from Duquesne University (US), a Juris Doctor (LLB) from the University of Pittsburgh (US) with a specialisation in international and comparative law where she was awarded an International Fellowship to study European Law in Brussels, as well as the CALI Excellence award for obtaining the highest grade in her criminal law course. She also completed a dissertation concerning the status of the European Software Patent as of May 2005. Justine also holds an honours certificate in European Law studies from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium), and an LLM in European Law studies from Queen Mary, University of London, specifically focused on the European Internal Market and Justice and Home Affairs. She is qualified as a lawyer in the US, having passed the bar in the state of Pennsylvania in November of 2005.
