Event Details

The Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law and Chatham House invite you to attend this lecture.

Robert Pé will consider the need to promote crucial reforms of the country's 2008 Constitution, provide an update on the procedures and prospects for reform and consider other aspects of the legal system, the workings of the Parliament and the foreign investment landscape.

Since 2012, Robert Pé has been the advisor on legal affairs to Daw Aung Sang Suu Kyi. He is a partner of US-based international law firm, Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe and divides his time between Hong Kong, Naypyitaw and Yangon. Half Burmese and half English in origin, he is the grandson of the Cambridge educated Mr Justice On Pé who was one of two Burmese appeal court judges who dismissed the appeal of the mastermind behind the murder of the country's independence hero and father of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, General Aung San. The family left Burma in 1962 shortly before the military coup which brought General Ne Win to power and set the country on the "Burmese road to socialism" and five decades of military rule. Robert Pé was born and raised in the UK and graduated with an LLB (Hons) degree from the London School of Economics. He was first able to visit Burma in 1991 and his love of the country subsequently caused him to move to Asia.
