What is this event about?

Human rights and the global economy depend on one another. Human rights need the economy as a means to an end. The economy needs human rights as an essential moral compass. Globalisation is a civilising force that is also a force that must be civilised.

Rights advocates need to come to terms with how the economy works if they are to have any influence over it. Economists, financiers and industrialists' every action impacts on human rights; sometimes positively, other times negatively. If a new and fairer world economic order is emerge, then it is essential that such consequences are acknowledged and understood.

In order to make the economy work for human rights, the question is no longer whether to regulate, but how to do so. Professor David Kinley will deal with all these issues and offer ways forward to resolve them.

Professor David Kinley holds the Chair in Human Rights Law at the University of Sydney, Australia. He is the author of Civilising Globalisation: Human Rights and the Global Economy (CUP, 2009).
