The Route to the Bench in the US and the UK
Tuesday 23 October 2007 18:00 to 20:00
Participants
Chair: Lord Justice Rix
Speakers:
The US judicial selection procedures are undergoing profound changes based upon court decisions, the proliferation of special interest groups seeking tacit or explicit approval of their agendas by judicial candidates and the infusion of great amounts of cash in judicial election campaigns. There is great debate among the media, bar groups, reform organizations and the general public as to whether the election of state court judges (the selection method in 38 states) makes any sense at all. Similarly, the selection of judges for the federal bench is no less controversial as that process has become highly ideological and partisan, leading to numerous vacancies in many Federal circuits due to an inability of many candidates to secure Senate approval. Judge Glazer's talk will explore the high and low points of judicial selection in the US.
