Access to Justice in Sudan

In 2003 the Institute produced a desk study for the Department for International Development (DfID) to underpin its programme of re-engagement with the country. The study focused on two principal areas:

  • Issues relating to access to justice, with a particular focus on access for the poor through customary justice
  • Other international donors' plans and initiatives in Sudan.

This desk study aimed to provide assistance to the South Sudanese Centre for Documentation and Advocacy in the preparation of future long-term study of customary law.

The desk study was used by DfID in considering how to engage in the justice sector in Sudan and, in selected areas, to provide background material essential in design of any programmes. It enabled DfID to fulfil its objectives on gathering information on the justice sector including access to justice in Sudan, including information available in the UK and elsewhere.

The report was produced by David Spivack and Hugo Warner, research fellows at the Institute.
